1 Fish, 2 Fish, Math fish, Who Fish?
My Students: When was the last time you used math? Chances are, you've used math sometime within the last hour. I want my students to be math problem solvers both in first grade and as they grow into adults.
My first graders are energetic and excited to learn. Hands-on math keeps their minds growing. The deeper level thinking that occurs is all because students have the ability to touch, manipulate and generate conclusions. This is what learning is all about.
77% of our school population is on free and reduced lunch. My students work hard and overcome daily challenges outside their lives. I want to give them a classroom that is full of tools that they can use to make sense of math.
My Project: Through the use of many hands-on tools my students will engage in daily lessons that will help them to understand number sense.
The use of ten frames will allow my students to create and understand numbers when adding and subtracting.
By having base ten blocks that are magnetic to use on my whole group math instruction board, students will be able to visually see how we "bundle" and "regroup" to make ten.
In addition to those items, the use of whiteboards with our number chart up to 120 will add to my students' basic knowledge of creating numbers and patterns.
This project will continue to engage my students with building their number sense. Having hands-on tools that students can manipulate will keep my first graders engage and learning all year long! « hide
My students need magnetic base ten set, a calendar math center, ten-frames magnetic answer boards to help improve with their math fluency.
